Tips and Recommendations for Renting a Car Abroad

Delays in vehicle pickup, an invalid credit card, or additional charges at the rental counter can spoil the experience and increase the cost of your trip.

Here are some rules and tips to help ensure a stress-free rental experience:

Credit Card Rules

  • Driver's Name: The credit card must belong to the primary driver listed in the rental agreement.
  • Physical Card: The primary driver must present the physical card at the rental location; credit cards stored on a mobile phone will not be accepted.
  • PIN Code: The customer must know the card's PIN to process the security deposit.
  • Card Type: Rental companies require a "true" credit card for the security deposit. Debit cards, prepaid cards, or "Direct" cards are generally not accepted for this purpose.
  • Available Credit Limit: Ensure you have a sufficient available credit limit. The company will place a hold on funds as a security deposit (to cover the excess/deductible and fuel costs), which will be released only after the vehicle is returned

Delay in vehicle pickup

  • Notify in advance: If you expect to be late, you must inform the rental company.
  • Risk of cancellation: If you do not notify them, the company may mark you as a "no-show," cancel your reservation, and rent the vehicle to someone else.
  • Cancellation fees: In the event of a "No-show," the rental company will typically charge partial or full cancellation fees.

Avoiding unnecessary costs at the counter

  • Arrange insurance in advance: Purchasing insurance directly at the rental counter is significantly more expensive. Purchase our "Full Coverage" service or an excess waiver (deductible reduction) in advance via the booking website.
  • Fuel Policy: Please ensure you return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you received it. If you return the vehicle with less fuel, you will be charged an exorbitant rate per liter of fuel, plus a refueling service fee and local taxes.
  • Unnecessary extras: Check whether you truly need add-ons such as child safety seats, an additional driver, or a GPS device. Bringing your own equipment or using navigation apps on your phone can save you unnecessary expenses.
  • Photograph the vehicle: Take photos of the car from all angles (including the roof) and ensure that any existing scratches or dents are recorded on the representative’s handover form, so that you are not charged for damage you did not cause.

International Driving Permit

Obtaining an international driving permit is a crucial step, as many rental companies and local police abroad do not accept the standard local driver's license—even if it includes English text. Failure to present an international permit could result in being denied the rental vehicle, incurring heavy fines, facing delays, or even the voiding of insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

Validity and Important Guidelines:

  • It is mandatory to carry a valid international license on every trip.

Vehicle Cleaning

Returning a vehicle that is dirty or shows signs of smoking may result in heavy fines—amounting to hundreds of euros or dollars—categorized as "special cleaning fees." Since the assessment of the vehicle's condition is left entirely to the discretion of the rental provider, it is best to take preventive measures.

To avoid unexpected charges, be sure to follow these guidelines:

Strictly no smoking!!

  • Without exception: rental companies strictly prohibit smoking in the vehicle (including electronic cigarettes and vaping).
  • :Easy to spot: Company representatives are trained to detect the smell of cigarettes, ash, or tobacco crumbs, and a charge for this is almost automatic.
  • Maintaining cleanliness
  • Excessive soiling: Sand, mud, food and drink stains on the seats, or animal hair are considered soiling beyond what is reasonable.
  • Quick self-cleanup: Just before returning the vehicle, remove all trash (bottles, wrappers).
  • Car Wash: If the vehicle is very dirty—whether on the outside (mud) or the inside—stop by a local car wash and spend a small amount on cleaning or vacuuming. This will save you from a costly fine at the rental counter.

Fuel tank

Returning a vehicle with an incomplete tank of fuel is one of the most common and costly mistakes, as rental companies charge a double penalty: they bill you for the missing fuel at an exorbitant rate, and additionally impose a fixed fine known as a "special refueling fee."

To avoid these double charges, follow these guidelines:

The common fuel policy (Full to Full)

  • Vehicle Pickup: The vehicle is provided to you with a full tank. Ensure that the fuel gauge indicates "full" before leaving the lot. If fuel is missing, notify a representative and take a photo of the gauge.
  • Returning the vehicle: The vehicle must be returned with a completely full tank.
  • Last gas station: Refuel the vehicle at the station closest to the return location (usually within a radius of 10–15 km from the airport/rental station).

Proof of Refueling and Retaining Receipts

  • Keep the receipt: Always hold onto the paper receipt from the last gas station. It serves as proof that you refueled at the right time and at the correct distance.
  • Photograph the fuel gauge: Just before handing over the key, take a photo with your phone of the fuel gauge on the dashboard while the engine is running, along with a photo of the odometer.

"Empty Tank" Option (Pre-paid Fuel)

  • Pre-purchase: Some companies offer the option to pre-purchase the first tank of fuel (returning the vehicle with an empty tank).
  • When does this make sense? This option is only worthwhile if you know for certain that you will use up the fuel down to the very last liter, or if your flight departs very early in the morning and you won't have time to look for an open gas station. In any other case, you will end up paying for fuel that remains in the tank and goes unused.
